Certifications are essential for construction companies and architects to ensure that the products they use in their projects really are sustainable.<\/h2>\n

Fortunately for everyone, <\/span>sustainable architecture<\/strong><\/a> is no longer an ideal vision, but the everyday commitment of many people<\/strong><\/a>. There are more and more <\/span>architects, construction companies and designers <\/b>that create their<\/span> projects with respect for the environment<\/b>. Mere intention, however, is not enough. For example, there is no point in talking about <\/span>sustainable materials<\/b>, like that, generically, if it is not possible to trace their manufacture route.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s use the case of <\/span>wood products<\/b>. Wood is, by definition, a <\/span>natural material<\/b>. But wood products are only <\/span>sustainable and ecological<\/b><\/a> if their manufacture process prioritises sustainability goals<\/a> and <\/span>guarantees the protection and continuity of the forests<\/b> from which this raw material is extracted.<\/span><\/p>\n

This guarantee only comes from certifications<\/a>. <\/span>Hallmarks of quality and sustainability<\/b> granted for levels approved and known all over the world.<\/span> These are <\/span>the most significant sustainability certifications<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council)<\/b><\/h3>\n

The <\/span>FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)<\/b> is an independent, not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation, that issues <\/span>one of the most significant certifications<\/b> to ensure that the forestry product acquired (wood or paper) comes from a <\/span>sustainably managed forest<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It originated in California in 1990, and was the first step in establishing a <\/span>worldwide sustainable certification<\/b> for these types of products, that was finally consolidated with the creation of the Founding Assembly in Toronto in 1993.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>FSC certificate<\/b> is a complete guarantee of sustainability, supported by ONGs such as the WWF.<\/span><\/p>\n

PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification)<\/b><\/h3>\n

PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification)<\/b> is the most widespread forestry certification system in the world. This organisation, also not-for-profit, <\/span>originated in the forestry sector itself<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The objectives of the PEFC are to protect forestry resources, the ecosystem and biological diversity, and contribute to the socioeconomic development of the communities where these forest masses are located.<\/span><\/p>\n

EPD (Environmental Product Declaration)<\/b><\/h3>\n

An <\/span>EPD or Environmental Product Declaration<\/b> is a certified document that <\/span>provides information on the environmental impact of a product<\/b>, material or service. This certification is a standard in construction, a sector where laws and new regulations on improvements in <\/span>energy efficiency and sustainability<\/b><\/a> come up practically every minute.<\/span><\/p>\n

The EPD is drawn up by the manufacturer, where the <\/span>potential of the building material to reduce the impact on the environment<\/b> is argued. This declaration must then be verified by approved independent organisations, called Programme Administrators.<\/span><\/p>\n
