In the Aibar Valley, in Navarre, the village of Izco has refurbished the façade of its municipal fronton with Accoya acetylated wood. The intervention, by architect Marc Buxó from the studio ATEIN, brings back to life a heritage facility deeply tied to the cultural identity of the valley.
Unlike other interventions, where Accoya wood is planed to achieve smooth finishes, in Izco the approach has been the opposite: to install the boards rough-sawn, without planing.
The result openly displays the marks of the battens and engages with the rural character and honesty of the fronton. A total of 16 m³ of Accoya, grade A1, have been installed in a raw section of 200x50 mm.
For a publicly used facility, Accoya delivers all the guarantees an exposed façade requires: dimensional stability, resistance to biological agents and fifty years of written warranty above ground.
A coherent choice for a building that must remain standing — and in play — for many decades to come. Construction was carried out by Comal, and the installation of the wood by Egoin.
